Summary

A phenomenon across all formats, this 42nd anniversary paperback omnibus contains the complete Hitchhiker's Guide trilogy in five parts, charting the whole of Arthur Dent's odyssey through space and time。 Share and enjoy。

Collected together in this omnibus are the five titles that comprise Douglas Adams' wildly popular and wholly remarkable comedy science fiction 'trilogy', introductions to each book, expanded material from the Douglas Adams archives plus a bonus short story, Young Zaphod Plays It Safe, and a special undeleted scene 。 。 。

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
One Thursday lunchtime the Earth gets unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass。 For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be rather a lot to cope with。 Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun。 The Galaxy may offer a mind-boggling variety of ways to be blown up and/or insulted, but it’s very hard to get a cup of tea。

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
When all questions of space, time, matter and the nature of being have been resolved, only one question remains - 'Where shall we have dinner?' The Restaurant at the End of the Universe provides the ultimate gastronomic experience, and for once there is no morning after to worry about。

Life, the Universe and Everything,/b>
Following a number of stunning catastrophes, Arthur Dent is surprised to find himself living in a hideously miserable cave on prehistoric Earth。 However, just as he thinks that things cannot get possibly worse, they suddenly do。 An eddy in the space-time continuum lands him, Ford Prefect, and their flying sofa in the middle of the cricket ground at Lord's, just two days before the world is due to be destroyed by the Vogons。 Escaping the end of the world for a second time, Arthur, Ford, and their old friend Slartibartfast embark (reluctantly) on a mission to save the whole galaxy from fanatical robots。 Not bad for a man in his dressing gown。

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
There is a knack to flying。 The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss。 It's not an easy thing to do, and Arthur Dent thinks he's the only human who's been able to master this nifty little trick - until he meets Fenchurch, the woman of his dreams。 Fenchurch once realised how the world could be made a good and happy place。 Unfortunately, she's forgotten。 Convinced that the secret lies within God's Final Message to His Creation, they go in search of it。 And, in a dramatic break with tradition, actually find it 。 。 。

Mostly Harmless
Arthur Dent has settled down on the small planet Lamuella and has embraced his role as a Sandwich Maker。 However, his plans for a quiet life are thrown awry by the unexpected arrival of his daughter。 There's nothing worse than a frustrated teenager with a copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in their hands。 When she runs away, Arthur goes after her determined to save her from the horrors of the universe。 After all - he's encountered most of them before。

Goofy, random, distracting, wild, chaotic sci-fi。。 It delivered on every aspect for my taste。Ps。 Try to listen to it read by Stephen fry it quadruples the experience

I think the writing is clever and the pacing is great。 The storyline is interesting and the author has done a really good job in making you think of topics from an interesting perspective。 The reason for 3 stars is I did not feel particularly attached to any character。

Obviously didn't exactly "read," but listened to all the radio plays back when they was first broadcast in the last '70s, and then bought the CDs to listen to with my sons in the early 2000s。The books are generally outstanding, but can't help but fade a little bit as the series goes on - impossible to maintain the level of freshness found in the first 2-3 books。 And these radio dramas are equally wonderful, with spot-on character voices that my kids still mimic nearly 20 years on。Find and listen Obviously didn't exactly "read," but listened to all the radio plays back when they was first broadcast in the last '70s, and then bought the CDs to listen to with my sons in the early 2000s。The books are generally outstanding, but can't help but fade a little bit as the series goes on - impossible to maintain the level of freshness found in the first 2-3 books。 And these radio dramas are equally wonderful, with spot-on character voices that my kids still mimic nearly 20 years on。Find and listen to these if you can (despite being called "complete," this package only contains the Primary and Secondary Phases; the others are all available separately) - you will not be disappointed。 。。。more

One of my favourite series ever。

02/26/2022。 I just finished "Restaurant at the End of the Universe。" Book 2 in the set of five in the box set I bought。 I had a hard time getting through "The Hitchhiker's Guide" until about mid-way through。 It wasn't because the book wasn't clever or imaginatively written。 It was because it had been a while since I read anything so "absurd" and nonsensical。 It was nostalgic。 The 80s were for me the moment in time I discovered the surreal humor and wit of Monty Python。 "The Hitchhiker's Guide" w 02/26/2022。 I just finished "Restaurant at the End of the Universe。" Book 2 in the set of five in the box set I bought。 I had a hard time getting through "The Hitchhiker's Guide" until about mid-way through。 It wasn't because the book wasn't clever or imaginatively written。 It was because it had been a while since I read anything so "absurd" and nonsensical。 It was nostalgic。 The 80s were for me the moment in time I discovered the surreal humor and wit of Monty Python。 "The Hitchhiker's Guide" was the book the school "geeks" and "science nerds" mentioned with suppressed titters and giggles。 It was their inside joke。 A connection their ilk shared that kept them "safe。"I never read it。 Honestly, it was out of reach because of the headspace I was in as a teen。 I'm reading it now and after an adjustment in perspective and expectation have been enjoying the series。 The conclusions are clever and though published four decades+ ago, it is as searingly insightful as they claimed it to be at the beginning。 。。。more

good, amusing, lots of fun quotes are referenced so the series is required reading。Adams has so many great ideas and just throws them out almost carelessly, maybe the series is a bit anarchic but that is its charm

This book is the Mother and Father of all SiFi genre。 Of course, it’s an exageration but read it and you’ll see。 It doesen’t take itself very seriously, just like, we, the people, shouldn’t take life this seriously。 Or anything that we do。 Life, The Universe and Everything。 To hell with all of this „finding meaning”。 Just live and explore, explore and live。 And, surley we can’t find a spaceship to take us through the Galaxy, but we can find something on this Planet to explore。 And yes, the first This book is the Mother and Father of all SiFi genre。 Of course, it’s an exageration but read it and you’ll see。 It doesen’t take itself very seriously, just like, we, the people, shouldn’t take life this seriously。 Or anything that we do。 Life, The Universe and Everything。 To hell with all of this „finding meaning”。 Just live and explore, explore and live。 And, surley we can’t find a spaceship to take us through the Galaxy, but we can find something on this Planet to explore。 And yes, the first three are better that the last two in the omnibus, but who cares?! Just read it, laugh with it, roll your eyes with it, laugh some more。 Because it’s filled with the very best humor ever and it does ring true to the day, even if it was written some 40 years ago。 And Bob Dylan was wrong。 The answer is not Blowing in The Wind。 The answer is 42。 Now, my spaceship has arrived and I think I’ll take up some Vogon poetry just to past time ‘till I reach The Horse Head Nebula。 Wish me luck! 。。。more

Began reading this book- or series of books- about a year ago。 It is really well written with such a unique hilarious style。 The irony is tremendous。 Though I found it difficult to put down once I picked it up, I wasn't always enthusiastic to pick it up in the first place。 It's just hard to jump into something funny。 Began reading this book- or series of books- about a year ago。 It is really well written with such a unique hilarious style。 The irony is tremendous。 Though I found it difficult to put down once I picked it up, I wasn't always enthusiastic to pick it up in the first place。 It's just hard to jump into something funny。 。。。more

There isn’t anything I can say to do this trilogy in five parts justice。 Douglas Adams is a genius。 This book is so, so many things and it’s absolutely brilliant。

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy3/5 stars - This was definitely an intriguing read, and I wasn't too sure what I was expecting going into this。 It was lightly amusing at times, and I found I was interested in it despite the quite dense writing and the absurdist quality to it。 I wouldn't say it's among the best things I've ever read, but I am glad that I finally picked up this series and am looking forward to continuing onto the next novels。 The Restaurant at the End of the Universe2。 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy3/5 stars - This was definitely an intriguing read, and I wasn't too sure what I was expecting going into this。 It was lightly amusing at times, and I found I was interested in it despite the quite dense writing and the absurdist quality to it。 I wouldn't say it's among the best things I've ever read, but I am glad that I finally picked up this series and am looking forward to continuing onto the next novels。 The Restaurant at the End of the Universe2。5/5 stars - This had the same sort of humour and quality as the first novel, but the more I read the more I come to terms with the fact that it isn't really my sort of thing。 Life, The Universe and Everything2。5/5 stars - Honestly, the more I continue with this series the more disenchanted with it I get。 As said previously, the humour isn't really my sort of thing and whilst I could appreciate what Adams set out to do in the first novel, the increasingly long list of bizarre events and situations that continues into this novel just doesn't interest me all that much。 This wasn't bad by any means, I just don't think it's really for me。 Still, I am going to finish the original five novels to satisfy the completionist in me。 So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish2/5 stars - This steps a bit away from the previous novels as it is set mostly on Earth, with Arthur having returned there, and as such it did feel a little slower at times。 That being said, there was a clearer sense of the plot in this one even though it felt different from the three previous novels in the series。 God's message was definitely a highlight of the book, and it was one of the few moments that made me smile throughout the novel。 Sadly, I can't say I particularly enjoyed this read though。 I don't think this sort of story and Adams' writing is really for me, and my writing reflects that。 At the very least there is only one more left to read now。 Mostly Harmless2/5 stars - Honestly, at this point I didn't really care and my attention did drift several times whilst reading this。 I wasn't absorbed in the story, the humour wasn't really my thing, and though I could understand why people love and adore this series, it's just not for me in the end。 。。。more

“Don’t Panic”This book (or these 5 books) can be most compared to the matrix series。 The first one was great (in this case the first two) and the others…not so much。But is it because the sequels were bad? Or that the first one was just that good it was hard to follow it up? I believe the latter。 The banter between the two main characters was where Adams found his groove。 They stumble along the universe, always seeming to find themselves in the most ridiculously hilarious predicaments; with equal “Don’t Panic”This book (or these 5 books) can be most compared to the matrix series。 The first one was great (in this case the first two) and the others…not so much。But is it because the sequels were bad? A pinnacle of sci-fi novels and absurd humor。Using brilliant storytelling, convoluted yet convincing world building and amazing character interactions - all of it sprinkled with some philosophical reflexions- Adams manages to create 5 superb books, each standing strongly on its own。

The Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy is probably the best non-fiction book you will ever read。 The amount of detail that Douglas Adams put into things that never end up going anywhere is plentiful and rivals the detail of Terry Pratchett。 I highly recommend this book for anyone who is a non-fiction lover, such as myself。 I think it's worth buying a hardcover version because it makes a very useful weapon if you find yourself in a situation that warrants the use of one。 The Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy is probably the best non-fiction book you will ever read。 The amount of detail that Douglas Adams put into things that never end up going anywhere is plentiful and rivals the detail of Terry Pratchett。 I highly recommend this book for anyone who is a non-fiction lover, such as myself。 I think it's worth buying a hardcover version because it makes a very useful weapon if you find yourself in a situation that warrants the use of one。 。。。more
